Be a Leader or Co-Leader Becoming
a leader or co-leader is a great way to become involved in your
daughter’s activities. Whether you are a mom, dad, aunt, uncle,
or friend, you can become a leader or co-leader in just 5 easy
steps!
- Contact your local Membership Coordinator about becoming
a leader or co-leader. She will give you a volunteer
application to fill out.
- Next, meet with your Membership Coordinator for a
QuickStart. This meeting will give you all the important
information on how to start a troop and the resources
available to leaders.
- After your QuickStart, complete Online Orientation,
which lasts approximately 45 minutes.
- Once you attend a QuickStart you can start holding troop
meetings!
- Take New Leader Basic and Age Level training. The Girl
Scout Council of the Florida Panhandle will provide you with
training to help you learn what you need to know to be a
Girl Scout leader. Training for new leaders will take 6
hours (two 3-hour sessions) and you have 4 months to
complete the training.
In Girl Scouting “one size does not fit all.” As a Girl
Scout leader you have the flexibility to decide when, where,
and how often your troop/group will meet. This allows you to
plan Girl Scouting around your daily activities.
Troops/groups can meet after school, in the evening, or on
weekends. Troops can meet every week if the leader chooses
to, but the majority of troops meet twice a month. In Girl
Scouting, you have the flexibility to meet your needs and
the needs of the girls.
Being a Girl Scout leader can take as few as 6 hours a month
to as much time as you choose to spend.
- Troops generally meet for 1 ˝ hours, twice a month.
If you spend an hour preparing for each meeting you will
spend at least 5 hours a month on your troop.
- Service Unit Meetings are held once a month. At
these meetings, leaders learn what activities are
available for girls in their community and Council-wide.
This is also a great way to meet other leaders who have
ideas and good advice to help you with your troop. These
meetings last about an hour.
- Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity
to take your troop to programs and events. These events
can last anywhere from 3 hours to overnight.
- As a leader you will have the opportunity to help
plan program events for the girls in your area or to
volunteer at the Council level. This will take a larger
time commitment.
