Get Real! Mentoring Program
The
Get Real! Mentoring Program is a special Girl Scout Program offered
by Councils across Florida. The Florida Panhandle Get Real! program
is a special way for girls to have one on one mentoring, and become
a Girl Scout.
The mission of the Get Real! program is to impact school performance
and attendance of at risk middle school girls, by increasing their
motivation and ability to make positive life choices, with the help
from caring community members serving as the girl’s mentors. Get
Real! promotes reading and writing opportunities to help improve
literacy skills.
- This Girl Scouting program was inspired as a part of the
Governor’s Mentoring Initiative.
- Girls are volunteer participants and parent permission is
required.
- Small Group Sessions are based on a 30-week program,
alternating weekly between small group discussions and
individual mentoring.
Meeting topics include:
- Self-esteem
- Love and Caring For Others
- Responsibility
- Prejudice and Stereotyping
- Substance Abuse Prevention
- Honesty
Girls who participated in the Get Real! program:
- Had a special “Night of Elegance” which allowed the girls to
practice etiquette skills by getting dressed up, going out to
dinner, and viewing the off Broadway show “The Wizard of Oz”
- Had team building workshops during group sleepovers
- Had various speakers, who showed girls that they can do
anything if they set their mind to it
- Ran Girl Scout Cookie booths, which help girls with
literacy, team building, and business skills.
The Get Real! program is not for everyone. This special
program is only offered in certain areas. For the 2008/2009 school
year, the Get Real! program was offered at:
- Pace School for Girls
- Havana Middle School
- Rickards High School
- Wakulla Middle School
- ASAP Center in Panama City.
Check back soon for a list of schools participating for the
2009/2010 school year.
